Clean & Modern Cake Smash Photography
Not actually clean, no. Mom and I usually leave with cake in places we won’t find for a few hours. In terms of styling though, clean & modern is easily achieved using the right setting.
We chose the Mint Room for their beautiful space, tasteful décor, and bright windows that offer killer natural light. Keeping the decorations, props, and accessories to a minimum keep the baby as the focus. To make it more feminine and fun, the baby outfits helped achieve this while keeping to a minimalistic vibe.
With a neutral and coordinating clothing palette, skin tone, and setting, the expressions and the baby are the highlight of each baby picture.
Photo Shoot Location
Mint Room Studios is by far my favorite rental studio in the city. They have a number of rooms to choose from that range in vibe from pure white and serene to a super dark library. They have a stylish kitchen, which would actually be a really cute cake smash bakery scene. Other rooms include Moroccan/Boho vibes, hotel or lifestyle concepts.
The Cake Smash Setup
The studio setup for a cake smash needs to have bare walls and floor. The baby should wear something plain, neutral, and flattering to the skin tone. Exposing as much skin as possible is highly recommended because it looks great in photos and makes for an easy cleanup.
Cake Advice
Do not spend a million dollars on the cake. The fondant and decorative sugar is hard for them to break off and ‘smash’. Often times they become intimidated and give up on the process. ‘Naked-style’ cakes are the best! The rustic icing that coats the sides are soft and easy broken apart. Florals and other details can be easily added without interfering with the process of breaking the cake apart. Buttercream icing is also a great alternative to fondant as it melts easily. My favorite is when the baby rubs it on their skin like lotion, can you believe it? I’ve seen it. Hilarious.
