It dawned on me that it may be beneficial to share a typical gallery from a recent in-home newborn session. I normally share a few favourite images from the shoot to put into my blogs. There is so much variety from shoot to shoot that it’s hard to quantify exactly how our session will look. No matter how much planning go into these sessions, we roll the dice that day and give it our best. Your baby is my boss that day, very much like at home. I wanted to write a piece that explains my process and what you can really expect from an in-home newborn session with me.
If you’ve worked with me in the past, then you know you can just kick up your feet and let me worry about the rest. I work best with vague instructions like ‘soft and pretty’ or ‘modern but cute’. I feel out your vibe and usually ask a few questions to get a sense of your preferrences. I’ll show you pieces that I think you may like and see which things you gravitate towards. The consultation is short and sweet and then I’ll make my way over to the little one. If we have older siblings involved in the session I like to involve them into the consultation right away and start building a rapport.
Where We Shoot
There are a few go-to places; master bedroom, nursery, living room. Anywhere there is the best light is usually where I do the bulk of the session. The nursery is important to document too, most parents have spent the last 9 months dreaming up the most perfect basket, linens, themes and colours in creating their baby’s first room. I take note of any special rooms, decorative details or unique ways to showcase your home and personalities.
To Pose or Not to Pose
That’s a good question, it depends. If your baby is sleepy and it’s something that you want to try, or like the look of – I can do a mini in-home newborn studio setup on a flat elevated surface somewhere (master bed, or couch) and give it a go if the lighting is right. If the conditions don’t exist for me, then I obviously can’t. I don’t normally go into a lifestyle session with the intention of posing – normally that is reserved for the studio. An in-home session is generally a very casual, laid-back style. That being said, I am always up for anything. My goal is to make you happy and if you really love something, I will always try my best to make your dreams come true.
Your gallery of session images get posted about 1-1.5 weeks later. In this post, this couple chose these 52 images for themselves out of around 80. The selections get sent out for additional editing and formatting. Once I receive them back, I review them for anything I may not like and resend for additional retouching. I will do this process over and over until they are perfect, but generally speaking they get it right on the first round. I put my finishing touches on them and send them to you in two formats; high-resolution and web-friendly social media formats.
